Impressions: Assassin's Creed 3

uPlay_PC_Wallpaper4_800x600 A few weeks ago, I walked up to a Datablitz store and bought a game I never thought I'd ever pick up. Assassin's Creed 2 was my last creed game and was satisfied with what the game had to offer. The next two games? Not so much. But Assassin's Creed 3 was a different beast. A new setting, a new ancestor, they even have a new game engine under the hood. With the PC version priced at P995, I convinced myself this would be a good buy. Boy, I didn't think I'd feel regret after spending 15 hours on the game.

Note: This is based on 50% game completion on Sequence 9 and is playing the PC version. I'm not finished with the game and all opinions and impressions of the game are only up to that point. This is not a full review.

Don't get me wrong. The game has some very good points. The problem is, there's an issue in almost every corner of the game. Be it a bug, gameplay flaw, or even a design layout,  there's always something that takes me away from the experience. There's always something that bothered me. It's one of the buggiest game's I've played in years. And to think this is considered a triple A title, whatever that's worth nowadays.

Bugs. There are so many it's a challenge to avoid them. Every now and then, you will come across NPC's leaning on a wall when there's no wall to begin with. Or whenever you loot, the camera controls lock up, forcing you to wait a few seconds in order to move again. Even during the start of the game, the young Conner fights and acts as if he has his hidden blades already equipped, but in reality, he hasn't acquired his assassin gear yet. The point is, the game keeps reminding you that it's not well polished, which is a shame because I most probably would have enjoyed the world more if I didn't see myself occasionally stopping to see something very bizarre.

Bugs aside, the problems with this game doesn't stop there. The gameplay has been completely simplified to the point that any sort of challenge is gone. Stealth is considered the optimal choice to approach most situations, but the fact that it's so easy to dispatch any enemy you come across, regardless of the equipment you have, I don't see any point in sneaking around. The simple gameplay make each encounter repetitive and down right easy. If ever you do find yourself in a bind with very low health, run away, wait for your life to go back Call of Duty style and just run back in. I feel too overpowered even at the start of the game, and as much as I'd like to be a badass, I would appreciate a challenge every now and then.

But Assassin's Creed 3 isn't all negatives and bugs. The best thing to come out of the third title is the naval battles, which looks amazing, and satisfying to engage in. This is one of the best parts of the game and every mission that involved me commanding my ship was worth my time. Thanks to the naval battles seen here, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is now on my watch list. Another great thing about this game is how the animation looks on the move. Conner looks fluid as ever and it's actually a treat to watch. Moving from tree to tree, building to building, it all feels natural...until you accidentally jump into a bag of hay just because it was in your path. Again, it keeps reminding you of that it has problems.

It was really hard for me to continue playing Assassin's Creed 3. I just lost any means of interest at the 15 hour mark. Story is not pulling me in, and bugs are everywhere to greet you. It may be a big segmented open world game with many tasks to keep you busy, but I now feel it's a waste of time, having no strong incentive to do them. When I play now, I just want to move forward with the main story and get it over with.

I'll finish this game eventually for the sake of giving my full opinion of this game, but it's disappointing to see this world get dumbed down and feel rushed. Is it because of the yearly release? I would like to think so. I was never a fan of Ubisoft's choice to release a new title every year. I'm still eyeing on Black Flag though, not because of it being an Assassin's Creed game, but for the fact that I get to roam around as a pirate pillaging other ships freely.

We need more pirate games.

Injustice: Gods Among Us - Martian Manhunter DLC reveal

During the final day, NetherRealms revealed a new DLC character that everybody was hoping to be included in the playable roster. Martian Manhunter is revealed with a trailer. To spice up the first look at the Martian in action, he fights against a new skin for Green Lantern, which I'm sure a lot of comic book fans would appreciate.

Ultra Street Fighter 4 announced

Don't think Street Fighter 4 is close to dead, it's far from it. Capcom just announced a new upgrade for their highly successful fighting game released in 2009. Ultra Street Fighter 4 will include six new stages, new costumes, a rebalance of previous characters, and five new characters, with one 'mystery' character that has yet to be announced. Capcom stated that this character will be new to Street Fighter, but not new in Capcom. The revealed four though is - Rolento, Posion, Hugo, and Elena. Nothing new, but good additions nevertheless.

If you want to watch or replay the whole last day, you can check Evo2013's twitch.tv archives.

Defiance 72-hour free trial now up

hellbug1-full Not watching the show? Or playing the game? Yea, me neither. But you can give the game a shot for free though if there's you have a slight interest in the game. The free trial is only given to PC players, and there's a limited time.

Defiance is an online shooter that blends with SyFy's latest sci-fi show with the same name. It's said that what happens in the show reflects the game, and vice-versa. Haven't given this game a shot, but now we get a chance to see what it has to offer without dropping money first.

Once you register, your timer starts. Your created account is given 72 hours to try out the game. What's funny is you have to download the client first, so depending on your connection, a lot of that free time given will be wasted on downloading the game.

You get a 200 EGA rating cap and if ever you get sucked into the world of Defiance, all progress are carried over once you buy the game.

Based on a Steam email, Steam Summer Sale goes live tomorrow

steam sale is coming Have a few bucks saved up? Hid your wallets then, because Steam's Summer sale is coming. It's not official just yet, but new information suggests that the sale will happen tomorrow, July 11.

An email was posted on Steam reddit showing Steam customer service might have either teased the date of the sale or accidentally mention the date.

steam-summer-sale-email_0-ss01

Well, I doubt he made a mistake since he placed a smiley after.

For those who don't know...

Every year Steam starts a big summer sale that brings great titles down to really low prices. We are talking about prices all the way down to 75% off, with different deals every day. Last year, they even included flash deals that only last around 8 hours each time. Even a community deal was introduced allowing customers to vote among the three titles that get to go on a big discount for a few hours.

So... it could be coming tomorrow. Damn, I'm not sure I'm ready to spend all that money on games I'll never play, are you?

Guild Wars 2 devs plan to add content every 2 weeks

28243_1_4ee95fc501 Usually MMO devs take longer to create more content as the months go by. Well, for Guild Wars 2, Arenanet plans to speed up the content updates from every 3 weeks to 2 weeks.

It's crazy, at the same time an amazing bit of news for players still stuck in the world of Tyria. The first example is the latest update that just came yesterday, The Sky Pirates of Tyria update, which is a follow-up to the current Dragon Bash festival still ongoing. With June almost over, we might see another content again soon since Arenanet has been releasing themed content every month since launch.

lead content designer Mike Zadorojn told Gamerzines that they are getting better and faster at creating content:

“It’s interesting because it feels like were launching [a new game] every two weeks, and so there’s still that level of excitement when we jump in and see what’s new, what’s going live, and play the content again and then realise, ‘Oh god there’s a bug, okay,’ then it all starts over again,” Zadorojny explained.

“’Okay we’ve got this issue, do we need to fix this right now, or can it wait until the next release? Okay we need to fix it now, okay what hotfix? what’s the priority? Do we have somebody working on it, what’s the solution?’ That kind of stuff…”

“Our goal is that as we do this, we’re getting better and better at it. We’re starting to catch the bigger mistakes that we would’ve missed earlier on. We’re starting to build the infrastructure, the framework and the tools to help us do this because we really think that this is the longevity of the product,” he told us with an air of confidence.

“If we can push this, if we can add content every two weeks that is engaging to the players, then really it’s almost like a TV show at that point. It’s kind of stay tuned until next week for the thrilling conclusion of…That’s where our goal is, and it’s really fascinating when you have an entire studio dedicated to pulling off.”

This concerns me a bit because throwing content out the door might ruin quality. But so far, it looks like they are pulling it off. This kind of consistent updates is rarely seen in a developer, and if they can really dish out good content every two weeks, it will only mean that other devs will pick up that it is possible and hopefully follow suit, because constant updates on an MMORPG is key to staying afloat.

Sky Pirates of Tyria was released just yesterday.
