Mortal Kombat Vita Gameplay Trailer

fataliteee When Netherrealm studios announced Mortal Kombat for the Vita, we were shortly presented not only with gameplay identical to it's home console counterpart but a slew of extra mini games and features too. We thought those were plenty but it seems there's more.

Aside from the fluid 60fps Mortal Kombat fighting gameplay that we now know and love, mini games such as igniting falling bombs to juggle the fighters and keep them airborne, fending off incoming missiles by tapping or wiping of blood that gets splattered on the screen using the PS Vita's touchscreeen have been included in the portable version of the latest Mortal Kombat. A few more mini games were showed and one of them is cutting off limbs from a fighter one by one ala a Fatality. Another showed you using Kenshi's psychic powers to ward off projectiles or using the gyroscope to balance a character to prevent them from falling into a pitt. What caught me off guard was the Fruit Ninja like mini game that was shown at about 0:42. It looks just like Fruit Ninja but instead of slicing up fruit, you slice up what appear to be body parts, there are even bombs in the Fruit Ninja mode.

The Vita version of Mortal Kombat looks to be the complete package of the console version and so much more. The only missing feature is online play which is a little sad but local adhoc play is available and is said to run at a perfect 60fps so you're opponent can't blame "the lag" when you rip their spine out.

Mortal Kombat Vita Trailer

We already know that Mortal Kombat will be coming to the PlayStation Vita complete with all the DLC characters and costumes plus new Vita exclusive game modes that take advantage of the systems features such as using the gyroscope to balance or using the touchscreen to input fatalities. However, there is one thing in this trailer that boggles my mind.

To be specific it's the whole changes in the background. Now this could just be a metaphor of you being able to play Mortal Kombat anywhere OR it could also mean that it will have one of the features that I find absolutely astonishing in another Vita fighting game called Reality Fighters. And that would be the ability to use the rear camera to project a video feed that becomes the background arena in the game.

skatepark A simple gimmick that isn't really groundbreaking but is definitely something that can set it apart from the home console version. Frankly, if that feature is included in the game then I am sold on both the game and system. I have yet to confirm if this really is a feature in the game but if it is then sorry Reality Fighters. On another note, if that was actual Vita game graphics shown in the trailer, then it looks even better than the footage that was released earlier.

Reality Fighters (PS Vita Game)

Now new gadgets, add-ons, and systems there is usually a gimmicky title that comes with it early on that makes use of the new and unique features available on the platform. With the Wii it was Wii Sports, the PS Move had stuff like Kung-Fu Riders (which I heard was horrible), and the DS had a demo of Metroid Prime Hunters which had you using the touchscreen to aim.

The PS Vita has a mix of features found in a lot of portable devices today, the one being used for the game Reality Fighters is the cameras. Reality Fighters is a fighting game where you create you own custom fighter and fight some other random created fighter. The thing is you can use the camera to take a picture of yourself and have the game generate your face on the character. Sounds cool and has your standard fare of gimmickry right? But wait, there's more. You also use the rear camera to capture a video stream of whatever is infront of you to use as the background arena for the fighters. The game looks fun and goofy. Perfect for when you're out and about and want to kill a few minutes by just beating the crap out of someone while using whatever you want as a background.

Motal Kombat Vita Gameplay and Features

swipetality

Mortal Kombat for the PS Vita just got announced a while back which surprised a lot of people since the latest Mortal Kombat is still a fairly new game. Some gameplay footage along with information about some of its new features has just surfaced and it's looking pretty good.

The Vita version will have all the characters and costumes (DLC included) from the its HD counterpart with a few obvious downgrades in terms of textures and graphics. Even with the portable downgrade, the game still looks incredible and is said to run at a solid 60 frames per second. Gameplay still looks as solid as the home console version and the new "gimmick" features that uses the front touchscreen and the accelerometer actually look fun.

touch xray

Some of the new features that were revealed was an option to use the touchscreen for performing fatalities, this was not something that they needed to add but it's nice that it's in there. Another new feature that was included is a new challenge tower that will have challenges that cleverly takes use of the Vita's technology such as using the accelerometer to balance your character so that they don't fall in a pit of death, wiping the blood off the screen while in battle, or fending off incoming missiles during a heated match.

Touchscreen and accelerometer gimmicks are usually an afterthought and end up not really adding much to the overall game or sometimes even hinder the experience. NetherRealm is actually incorporating a lot of really neat ideas into this portable bloodbath and quite frankly I am excited to see what the final product will be.
