Final Fantasy VII Remake Will Feature New Boss Battles
/ Carlos HernandezWe are still recovering by the sheer amount of details revealed this year, but Square Enix is far from over as they revealed even more details on Final Fantasy VII Remake via PlayStation’s blog. They discussed about the game’s systems, Materia, and even summons, but the developers confirmed in another post that there will be new bosses to overcome when we visit Midgard next year.
In a post found in Square Enix’s website, Final Fantasy VII Director Tatsuya Namura reiterated that “with regard to new characters, of whom I said during past interviews that there would be “none” – though they aren’t main characters, their numbers ended up growing considerably in the process of creating a rich depiction of Midgar. When you think of Midgar’s final boss, you probably think of the M.O.T.O.R., but in this game new bosses will appear and add to the excitement of the story even more.”, says Namura.
Based on the latest trailer shown for the game — which revealed new sections not found in the original game —this isn’t much of a surprise but it’s good to hear it officially that Final Fantasy VII Remake will not just be filled with nostalgic bosses and encounters we’ve experienced before.
Square Enix also reiterated that their remake of Final Fantasy VII is an episodic project and that the Final Fantasy VIII Remake, which comes out on March 3, 2020, will only take place in Midgar. This is treated as any other Final Fantasy numbered title over at Square Enix, which means that the volume of content we can expect would be somewhat similar.
The second game, which will take place outside Midgar, is now officially under production according to Namura. I can’t imagine how the team at Square Enix will manage the next game, but with the first game just months away from release, they’ve laid out the foundation, and it looks pretty solid so far.

While the dual-timeline mechanic is engaging, the story’s weak twists, forgettable characters, and technical issues hold it back. A nostalgic revisit, but not a standout entry in the series.
