Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier Will Shut Down for Good on January 11, 2023

Square Enix announced that their free-to-play mobile battle royale game Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier will be shutting down its service for good on January 11, 2023 at 12 AM PT / 3 AM EST. The online game is barely a year old.

With the announcement, the ability to purchase Shinra coins (the game’s premium currency) is now disabled, though people with remaining credits can make use of what coins they have until the service goes offline.

Square also announced that the non-english support for the Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier will end on October 31, 7 PM PT, 10 PM EST. Once it closes, text will be displayed in English for all players around the world until the game officially shuts down.

The dev team plans to update the game in its last few months online but they didn’t go into detail on what to expect from now until closure.

If you haven’t tried the free-to-play battle royale game yet, you have only a few months left before Square Enix closes shop. In less than a year, the game did reach at least four seasons of content, but obviously the updates weren’t enough to keep people playing.

It was a weird combination to begin with - the famed battle royale genre set in the Final Fantasy VII universe. A mix of guns, swords, materia, and iconic summons. Goes to show that famous series and a famous subgenre doesn’t always spell success.

Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier is available on iOS and Android.
