Kingdom Hearts 4 will be developed using Unreal Engine 5

Square Enix have officially revealed Kingdom Hearts 4, which brings Sora as the main protagonist once again along with Goofy and Donald. The reveal trailer showed in-game footage which is said to be used with Unreal Engine 4, but development of the game is being done with Unreal Engine 5.

It’s a seven-minute long trailer which started off revealing a new mobile game Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link, then quickly shifted to our first look at Kingdom Hearts 4 with Sora sporting a slightly new look. You see him waking up in a modern city and go head-to-head against a giant heartless.

Have a look at the reveal below.

It looks rather stunning but it seems that the in-game footage seen in the trailer was created using Unreal Engine 4. Square Enix is developing the game using Unreal Engine 5 though, according to details from the private Q&A session done after the reveal.

They didn’t go into more details about the game but they do expect to share more later down the line. It seems they revealed the game at this stage to avoid future leaks.

Here’s more information about Kingdom Hearts 4 based on the press release provided by Square Enix:

“In the announcement trailer, Sora makes a triumphant return with an updated look at the beginning of an epic new storyline titled the “Lost Master Arc.” Beginning with Sora facing off in a boss battle against a giant enemy, players are introduced to the Quadratum, a large, expansive city set in a gorgeous, realistic world unlike anything ever seen before in the KINGDOM HEARTS series. Fans will be excited to see the return of Sora’s well-known companions Donald and Goofy, in addition to the first appearance of Strelitzia, a mysterious new character who appears before Sora in this strange new setting.”

No release window or even platforms were announced for Kingdom Hearts 4 during the reveal.
