Resident Evil 3 Remake Reviews Just Went Live, Here's What Critics Think
/Resident Evil 3 is just days away from release and that means the reviews embargo has lifted and reviews of the remake are now flooding the internet. Some are incomplete as the multiplayer portion of the game - Resident Evil Resistance - needs more time to get a complete idea of the 4v1 game mode, especially once playerse populate Capcom’s servers.
Here’s a list of what’s out so far. and just by first glance, it’s a mix bag thanks to the expectations set by the Resident Evil 2 remake.
IGN (9/100): “Like Resident Evil 2 before it, Resident Evil 3’s 2020 remake does an amazing job of recapturing the horror and tension of the late ‘90s original while completely modernizing its gameplay. ”
Polygon (no score): “Resident Evil 3 is a great example of what a video game remake should be. It’s just that the source material is a little less impressive this time around — and so is the end result. “
Gamespot (6/10): “As a remake, Resident Evil 3 not only falls short of honoring its source, but it also doesn't quite stick the landing as a standalone horror experience. Even without taking into account the original game, or its predecessor, RE3 struggles to keep up with its pace amid a clashing of elements from survival horror and standard action. “
The Verge (no score): “Resident Evil 3 is an entertaining, well-made game that brings one of the series’s less-heralded entries right up to date. But almost everything it does right was part of Resident Evil 2 as well, and many of that game’s qualities are no longer present.”
PC Gamer (58/100): “Resident Evil 3 is essentially a chain of action set-pieces, threaded together with a paper-thin story and a few too many cutscenes. This is the direction the series started to take post-Resident Evil 4, when it seriously lost its way and we ended up with the abysmal Resident Evil 6, and I'd hate to see that happen again.”
Kotaku: “Resident Evil 3 is loud. It is a snarling dog too close to your face, spittle flying everywhere. For some players, the intensity will be a turn off. The original version is the link between the earlier games’ simmering spookiness and Resident Evil 4’s bold action.”
Metaphor: ReFantazio is now my favorite title from the Persona team by far. It’s one of those rare games where its main pillars work harmoniously, and you get lost in its charm. It’s a pristine JRPG, with enough style and substance to satisfy hardcore JRPG fans, Persona fans, and even those who rarely touch JRPGs.
