Weekend, what are you playing?

We are half way though May, new game releases are afoot but I'm sure most of you have a game or two to beat. So what are you playing?

Migoy: My Duodecim save got corrupted. My cousins were playing multiplayer and one of em had my PSP, the battery died right after a fight (where the game auto saves) so fuck it, gonna fully import my old Dissidia game keeping my old characters at maxed out at level 100. Aside from Dissidia Duodecim despair I feel a strong urge to play Final Fantasy Tactics (PSP) from square one. Also I've got an eye on another SquareEnix Game, Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection. Lotsa RPGs on my list. Gonna be a long day.

Quash: This weekend is still Mass Effect 2 for me. Working on my save file in my PS3 so that I can use that save for Mass Effect 3. In the main story I'm suppose to get the IFF but I'm focusing on all possible loyalty missions at this point and side quests before continuing. My goal is no one dead on the Suicide Mission, Max Paragon and mostly all important side quests done.  Oh! i also played some Diablo 2 co-op with a friend last friday. Currently on Act 2 with a level 18 Sorceress. This has to be my 4th Sorceress in that game, favorite class? yep. I've already decided to be a Wizard for Diablo 3.

Arlie: I've been exploring the Province of Cyrodiil this weekend. Yes, I'm playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for PC using my Female Nord Knight named "Arya Stark" (from Game of Thrones). I already finished the faction quests for the Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, Thieves Guild, Knights of the Nine and I am already halfway on the Dark Brotherhood quests (I already have my loyal steed, Shadowmere). As some of you might know, I've been streaming my TES IV: Oblivion gaming session live on our JTV channel. You can watch my previous game sessions archived there so please feel free to visit anytime, you might catch me or anyone of us play live and chat with us while we do fucked up shit like the video shown below.

I also played Brink, but I haven't tried multiplayer yet and the AI is just plain suck (could literally go around an AI enemy, clueless mofos). I already finished the Resistance campaign and already started with Security campaign. Overall, I like the game (it reminded me of Team Fortress 2) with better gameplay (PARKOUR BABYYYY!) and I might enjoy playing it online. You can also watch my Brink gaming sessions on our JTV channel.

Review: Batman the Brave and the Bold - The Videogame (DS)

Holy dual screened handheld systems, Batman! When crime is a foot, you can be a sure a swift punch to the nose from an entity called Justice will deliver evil doers to their rightful place behind bars. Hammers of Justice! It's Batman the Brave and the Bold - The Videogame for the Nintendo DS.

Batman the Brave and the Bold - The Videogame

Publisher: WB Interactive Ent.

Developer: WayForward

Platform" Nintendo DS

Rating: E 10+

Release: 9/7/2010

Batman the Brave and the Bold for the Nintendo DS is a side scrolling beat-em-up wherein you control the Dark Knight and another hero from the DC Universe to fight evil on 8 levels. Each level plays out like an episode of the show complete with the episode title appearing before you enter the stage. The hero you are paired up with varies depending on the level you choose, the likes of Green Arrow, Aquaman and Red Tornado among others lend their abilities to help you traverse the different stages. Story: As I said earlier, each level plays like an episode of the show with little narrative outside of the villain comitting evil and you having to stop him/her. None of the 'episode' tie in together in the end so there isn't a coherent story through out the game. Gameplay: The gameplay is your typical side scrolling beat-em-up. You have a light and heavy attack, a special attack button, a jump button, a guard button, and a button for character specific abilities. The combat isn't deep but not super shallow. Yes you can just do the same attack pattern over and over again but you can mix it up with a launching uppercut and air juggle opponents.

Batman can use weapons from his utility belt sure as his baterangs, gas grenades and the infamous 'lightsaber belt sword' that can be seen in the cartoon series. You gain access to more gadgets as you beat levels be powered up by coins gained from fallen enemies and spent in the batcave.

The other heroes can do the standard light and heavy attacks but the animations depend on their super powers which is pretty neat. Their special attacks also vary and is either used just for combat or for platforming. For example, Green Lantern can create blocks from his power ring for you to climb on to reach higher ground, Red Tornado shoots out smaller tornadoes that can harden laval streams so that Batman can ninja jump on.

Chaining enough hits together can initiate a screen clearning dual move between Batman and the current DC Superhero he's paired with. Some of these attacks are hilarious and I do it just to watch em, one in particular is that Green Lantern forms a jet out of his ring energy that flies across the screen while dropping bombs as Batman and Hal are riding it.

Touchscreen implementation is very minimal in this game, limiting only to tagging out your current character with another, initiating the dual clear screen attack and switching between Batman's weapons. It works well and though I'm glad we aren't presented with campy touchscreen minigames in levels, I wish they would've added just a bit more.

My problem with the combat is since you can power up Batman's equipment, it comes to a point that he becomes too overpowered early on in this very short game. And with this game's ridiculous length, thats already saying a lot. Aside from the moments where you are force to use the other hero to traverse the level, there is almost no real incentive to anyone other than Batman.

Platforming is simple, you run and jump through the level and use the heroes' abilities to get across. Batman has his trusty grappling hook and he can latch on bars to shimmey his way, Green Lantern can air dash, Red Tornado can hover, Green Arrow's arrows can be used as stepping stones, you get the drift. Its pretty obvious when and where you need to switch between heroes and use their abilities, none of the stages will have you scratching your head.

At the end of every level is a boss fight, most are straight forward though some may actually require you to think a bit but ultimately offer very little to no challenge.

My final thoughts on this game. I like the fact that it's very true to its source material, you see a lot of references to the show and they are all done pretty well. Even with a voiceless narrative, you feel thepersonality of the characters and it pretty much feels like you really are playing a scene from the show. Voice clips during gameplay sound like the characters on the show and just adds to the personality of the game. The graphics are in a 32bit style and are very well animated. Some segments are hilarious, especially if you follow the cartoon.

I wish this game just offered more, in terms of both challenge and variety. Sure this is meant to target kids who watch the show but that is no reason to make this game as easy as it is. There isn't even a real consequence if you die in game. You either just spawn from a really close checkpoints or start a battle over again which still isn't saying much  Aside from a boss battle or 2, the only real challenge I find in this game is in the challenge mode where you only use the other heroes instead of Batman.

Still, I think this game is at least worth a solid rental, a good weekend distraction.

Score: 68 / 100 Pros: True to its source material solid mechanics nicely animated sprites

Cons: Baby easy Very little replay value graphics (though nice) feel dated, like a GBA game

Weekend, what are you playing?

Here we are the at first weekend of May. PSN is still down but that can't keep a good gamer down. So what are you playing this weekend?

Migoy: Dissidia Duodecim is still hogging my PSP but I have been able to touch some other games. Started Cave Story again and I forgot how good that game was so I'll definitely be playing some more of that. I bought a Gun accessory for the Wii and it works suprisingly well, better than I expected at least so that made me revisit some of my older Wii shooting games such as Resident Evil: The Dark Side Chronicles. I also just got Thor: God of Thunder on the Wii and with that, by Odin's might I say thee NAY!

Quash: Saturday i joined a Super Street Fighter 2v2 tournament and had a blast. Won my first 2 matches, hit the winner's bracket and went downhill from there. After my team got eliminated I stayed to watch the Grand Finals and watching the best the Philippines has to offer was a treat. I played Chun Li and my partner played Honda, I didn't know my partner before the tournament since we teamed up in their forums but we both did well.

The tournament was a success so congratulations to pinoy2dfighters for a job well done, will make a post about it soon with pictures from the event. Since that tournament is over, i think ill continue my 4th Mass Effect 2 play through and get it over with.

Weekend, what are you playing?

We enter into the month of May and with the PlayStation Network still down, meaning that all PS3 owners have no online fun for 2 weekends now. Still, people nowadays usually have more than one means of playing a video game here or there. So, what are you playing this weekend?

Migoy: Still fighting the good fight in Dissidia 012 Duodecim: Final Fantasy. 50+ hours in and halfway through Scenario 000. Grinding with other characters on Quick Party battles on the side. I have a few PSX titles on my PSP which I got before the great PSN crash of 2011. Also found a few older PSX titles such as the 3 Road Rash games and Harry Potter 1. A bit of nostalgia gaming. I also found a GameCube memory card at Datablitz which I bought in a heartbeat and tested it by revisiting Mortal Kombat Deception, that game controls like butt.

Quash: Finally sat down and finished Crysis 2 yesterday. It was a great game overall and i'm thinking of making a review about it. Since Crysis 2 is out of the way i think i'll continue with Portal 2, i just started and hoping to finish this too by today. It was said to be arund 6-8 hours long but of course it all depends if i fail in some of the test chambers.

Arlie: Still playing Patapon 3, I am using Yumiyacha (Ranged type) as my primary Uberhero class and switched it to Wondabarappa who shoots crap out of a magical tuba. I might finally start on Dissidia 012 Duodecim: Final Fantasy this week. I will also play and hopefully finish today the fourth episode of Back To The Future: The Game which is entitled "Double Visions".

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D opening

Kyaaaa!~ This game looks so good! Can we still call it a port if they've improved the graphics this much? Now obviously the 3D can do better but compared to OoT's original N64 look, the 3D version is amazingly beautiful.

If you missed out on playing this on the N64, Gamecube, or even the Wii virtual console, you have no excuse not to play it now. Save your money, get a 3DS, get LoZ: OoT 3D and get Mega Man Legends 3. Do it!
