Everything We Know About Destiny 2’s The Edge of Fate Expansion

Destiny 2's next big expansion is The Edge of Fate, and will be revealed in may 2025

Bungie’s next big expansion for their looter shooter Destiny 2 will be revealed next month on May 6. It’s called The Edge of Fate and will kick off the game’s next major saga, following The Final Shape, which wrapped up the 10-year storyline that began all the way back in the original Destiny.

Destiny 2 Expansion - The Edge of Fate Details

The full reveal will go live on May 6 at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET. Previously codenamed Apollo, The Edge of Fate will mark the beginning of Year 11 content and Bungie’s new approach to expansions: moving away from one massive yearly release and instead delivering two smaller expansions per year.

This means players can expect two major updates during this cycle. As shown in the roadmap above, there will be two seasonal passes — one launching in the Summer, and another in the Fall. Then, in the Winter, the next expansion (codenamed Behemoth) will arrive. We’ll likely get a teaser or reveal for Behemoth during The Edge of Fate showcase, possibly when the Fall update goes live.

Bungie also shared more about their updated narrative structure for this expansion:

“Because the more you play and discover, the more the story progresses, so experiencing a certain number of threads opens up the next part of the story. The order in which you explore will be something you choose, but we have built Codename: Apollo (The Edge of Fate) in a way the story always makes sense and flows from beginning to middle to end.”

This time around, the story will unfold based on the player’s individual progression.

“There’s no time gating, no waiting for the next drop. Codename: Apollo’s story unfolds based on player progression.”

We’ll know more about how this all works when the full reveal lands in May.

The Stakes Are High for Year 11

This is a pivotal moment for a game now entering its 10th year. The Final Shape was arguably the best way to conclude the long journey players have gone through since the original launch of Destiny in 2014. The game has seen plenty of ups and downs, but Bungie truly stuck the landing with The Final Shape.

That said, the post-Final Shape period has felt like a downturn. For many players — myself included — it felt like the real end. A lot of the community drifted away, and the Episodes that followed felt more like stopgap content meant to keep the most committed players busy while Bungie worked on what’s next.

The Edge of Fate needs to reignite interest — and more importantly, prove that Destiny still has a future.

Can Bungie Handle Two Live Service Games?

2025 is shaping up to be a major year for Bungie. Not only are they preparing to launch this new Destiny 2 expansion, but their next big IP — Marathon — is also on the horizon. The studio revealed full gameplay footage this April, offering a glimpse into their spin on the extraction shooter subgenre.

Marathon is set to release on September 23, 2025, which isn’t far off. That timing raises a big question: Can Bungie realistically support two live service games at once? It’s something we’ll be watching closely — and The Edge of Fate might be the first real test.
