Apex Legends Battle Pass Changes: Real Money the Only Way to Buy Future Battle Passes
/EA and Respawn Entertainment are applying major changes to the battle pass system found in the free-to-play shooter Apex Legends. The biggest change is that players will need to spend real money to unlock a battle pass’s premium track, as before players can use Apex Coins, the game’s premium in-game currency.
Why is this a big deal? Well, Apex Legend’s battle pass always come with Apex Coins, and unlocking all tiers in a battle pass gives you enough of the premium currency to purchase future battle passes. This update to the system is taking that away, effectively forcing players to spend money ($9.99), leaving the premium currency to be used for other things like heroes or more cosmetics.
The decision to move from AC to real world currency is not one that we made lightly, but it does allow us to decrease the price of Premium+ for our community. The new Premium+ Battle Pass comes in at $19.99 USD* and offers additional value; a cost difference of ~29% when compared to the discontinued Premium Battle Pass Bundle at 2800 AC. says Respawn Entertainment in their battle pass update post.
Players have already expressed their disappointment with the coming change. The other changes were quickly overshadowed by the fact that Apex Coins are no longer an option in purchasing battle passes starting with Season 22.
Two Battle Passes Per Season
To make matters a bit worse, new seasons will feature two $9.99 battle passes per season rather than one, so it’s going to be costly for players if you’re eager to get whatever is included in the premium track.
Apex Legends isn’t doing so hot as Respawn Entertainment experienced a round of layoffs back in March. The esport side of the game then experienced a hacking incident during the North American finals as hackers were able to give those competing cheats during a match. There was also an incident in April where some players experienced account resets and lost progress due to an update.
