Battle Royale Spellbreak is shutting down its servers in early 2023
/Developer Proletariat announced that after four years, they have decided to end development of their spell-focused battle royale game Spellbreak and that servers for the game will shut down sometime in early 2023 permanently.
This isn’t much of a surprise as there was close to no new content to support the game in the latter parts of 2021 and the whole of 2022. Even their social media channels for the game remained silent, a terrible sign for a game’s future.
“Our vision was to create a fresh, multiplayer action-spellcasting game with exceptional movement and class customization that would give players the chance to unleash their inner battlemage.“We are grateful to everyone in the game’s community for exploring the magical worlds and experiences we created together. Spellbreak was an ambitious project that saw our team push new boundaries in design and development and we are excited to continue to innovate as we create new titles in the future.” says the Spellbreak development team in their blog post announcing the game’s closure.
Seth Sivak, CEO at Proletariat addressed the community of Spellbreak via the game’s official Subreddit saying that “Spellbreak was not able to break through and reach a sustainable place where we could continue to invest in it in the way we had dreamed of. We picked a hard path as an independent studio and decided to compete with some of the biggest games in the world. While we could not get the escape velocity needed, I do not regret the bold decisions we made in bringing Spellbreak to life.”
Spellbreak officially launched as a free-to-play title back in 2018 and is a unique spin in the battle royale subgenre as you play as wizards that can conjure spells with the help of elemental-based gauntlets, flinging spells at other players and even combining one spell with another to get different results.
