Saints Row Studios Volition Shuts Down for Good
/Volition Games, the studio that launched the Saints Row reboot last year, announced that they are shutting down, effective immediately.
Here’s the statement from Volition:
“The Volition team has proudly created world-class entertainment for fans around the globe for 30 years. We’ve been driven by a passion for our community and always worked to deliver joy, surprise, and delight.
This past June, Embracer Group announced a restructuring program to strengthen Embracer and maintain its position as a leader in the video game industry. As part of that program, they evaluated strategic and operational goals and made the difficult decision to close Volition effective immediately.
To help our team, we are working to provide job assistance and help smooth the transition for our Volition family members. We thank our customers and fans around the world for all the love and support over the years. You will always be in our hearts.
-Volition Games”
Volition was originally formed 30 years ago as Parallax Software Corporation, before officially changing its name to Volition in 1996. Then, the studio was acquired by THQ, but when THQ declared bankruptcy in 2012, the studio was acquired by Kock Media under the publisher Deep Silver. Koch Media was then acquired by Embracer Group in 2018.
Volition is best known for their work on the Saints Row series. Starting from the first Saints Row game to eventually releasing the crazy Saints Row The Third, and the super power-fuel Saints Row IV. The company attempted to reboot Saints Row last year but was given mixed reviews, receiving an average critic score of 63 on Opencritic and ~61 on Metacritic.
Steam user reviews of the game are also currently mixed as the reboot recently hit Steam last month.
Since its release last year, Volition released three DLCs for the reboot to complete the promised content found in the game’s expansion pass — ‘A Song of Ice and Dust’, ‘Doc Ketchums Murder Circus’, and ‘The Heist and the Hazardous’ — for those looking to get more out of the game.
The Saints Row reboot is currently front-lining the PlayStation Plus’ Monthly Games for September 2023.
Life is Strange: Double Exposure brings back Max Caulfield with new time-manipulation powers, but struggles to capture the original’s emotional weight. While the dual-timeline mechanic is engaging, the story’s weak twists, forgettable characters, and technical issues hold it back. A nostalgic revisit, but not a standout entry in the series.
