During the Six Invitational 2020, before Space Station Gaming won 3-2 against Ninjas in Pyjamas, Ubisoft detailed what they are planning for Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege in Year 5 and Year 6.

A panel of key developers joined the stage to talk about changes and what’s to come as Siege enters it’s 5th year of support. Pretty much giving fans of the tactical shooter a glimpse of its future.

A change of pace during the second half of Year 5

For Year 5, the first two seasons will go as it was in recent years - two new operators and a rework of a classic map, an in-game event, an arcade playlist, and a Battle Pass, Ubisoft’s latest method in monetizing Siege. Arcade playlist is their way of adding variety by including fun game modes similar to what Blizzard provides in Overwatch. One example is the Golden Gun game mode, which has each player equipped with a golden gun with one shot per reload.

Season 3 and 4 is where Ubisoft implements how they will release new content as the team will focus more of their time and effort improving the game’s core gameplay or simply add new ones. This results in just a single operator releasing in the last two seasons of Year 5 and this change continue in Year 6.

With regards to how they will improve the Siege’s core gameplay, they did mention one example that they are looking into, and that’s during the preparation phase, specifically the attackers, as they believe they can improve the experience of scouting the opposition with their respective drones. They also teased a feature where players can ping specific defenses placed by defenders to clearly relay that information quick and easy..

New gadgets for specific operators are planned for Siege as well and during the Siege panel, they mentioned a proximity alarm gadget for defenders, which goes off if an attacker goes near it. You can actually see it in the video above.

They also mentioned a complete rework of Tachanka, the operator equipped with a mounted machine gun. Well, he is now just walking around with the said machine gun. No mounting required as that’s his main weapon. To make matters worse, he’s also getting a grenade launcher that shoots incendiary rounds that burns the area for a few seconds. Yikes.

They also talked about reworking other content already in the game, like environments and how players interact with them, a map man system for competitive play, and a reputation system to battle toxicity in their community.

Ubisoft has not given these features mentioned a release window but expect it within Year 5 and Year 6. But Operation Void Edge, the first Season for this year, is now live on Rainbow Six: Siege’s test servers on the PC platform, which only means that it will launch on public servers very soon.
