CD Projekt Red Working On 3 Witcher Games, a New Cyberpunk 2077 Game, and a New IP
/CD Projekt Red gave us a glimpse of their future by announcing that the Polish company is working on five major projects – a new Cyberpunk 2077 game, three games set in the Witcher universe, and the fifth being an entirely new IP created by the studio.
They are going big, and thinking long-term. A showing of change through a series of videos breaking down what they plan to improve internally as a studio and what they are aiming to achieve in the next few years.
For starters, CD Projekt Red announced that all future projects will be developed using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5.
Here’s a breakdown of the five projects planned at CD Projekt Red.
Project Polaris
This project is the new Witcher trilogy currently being worked on by their main team at CD Projekt Red. Polaris, which will be the first game in the new series, will be considered as the new trilogy’s foundation, so that the team will have an easier time streamlining their work on the next two games as the company aims to release the new trilogy over a six year period starting from the release of Polaris.
Project Sirius
Project Sirius is being developed by the CD Projekt Red studio Molasses Flood and is a separate Witcher title that is “aimed at a broader audience”. The kicker here is that this title will contain multiplayer, a first for the Witcher franchise. Beyond this, nothing else was shared.
Project Canis Majoris
The third and last major Witcher project. This is more of a mystery than the others as all that was shared was that this project is being developed by an external studio, which will also use Unreal Engine 5 for it. It will also be open world and story-driven.
Project Orion
This will be the next big Cyberpunk 2077 game. It was never mentioned as a sequel but another jab at the world of Cyberpunk 2077. This will be spearheaded by the yet to be established Boston studio that will eventually be established as the North American branch for CD Projekt Red.
Codename Hadar
The final project is Hadar, CD Projekt Red’s entirely new IP created by the studio itself, a first considering their flagship IPs – Witcher universe and Cyberpunk universe – wasn’t created by the company and was already established through other mediums. A new IP was on the table for years and early concepts of the title started in 2021. No development has begun.
They are going big with the five big game projects mentioned today and they are not stopping there as they do aim to expand their IPs further through other mediums such as TV, and with the success of the recently released Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners, this just fuels their approach even more. The company also mentioned mobile as being part of their future as they plan to partner with other external companies to work on non-core projects of their major IPs.
This showing feels like CD Projekt Red’s answer to the horrible launch of Cyberpunk 2077, which tarnished their reputation heavily thanks to the quality and performance of the game in December 2020.
On the horizon, the company is still working on Cyberpunk 20277’s first expansion titled Phantom Liberty and they are aiming for a 2023 launch. The core game was also updated recently with the 1.6 Edgerunners update that adds further improvements to the game as well as new content that coincides with the Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners anime.
