Cyberpunk 2077 Concurrent Players Rising After Edgerunners Anime Release
/Since the launch of patch 1.6 for Cyberpunk 2077 and the release of Netflix anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, we see a surprising resurgence of interest to play CD Projekt Red’s latest RPG.
According to details in SteamDB, the PC version of Cyberpunk 2077 recently saw a bump in concurrent player numbers as the game hit over eighty thousand concurrent players in the last twenty four hours, for a game that launched back in 2020. The sudden surge is likely due to the launch of the new 10-episode anime series on Netflix called Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which is also set in the same city as Cyberpunk 2077.
It also helps that Cyberpunk 2077 was updated recently with the 1.6 patch called Edgerunners, adding more technical and performance upgrades as well as new content such as free DLC that directly ties to the anime show.
This isn’t the first time CD Projekt Red’s games experienced a sudden surge of popularity the moment the series based on the game’s world hits a platform like Netflix. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt also saw a similar pike in player count when season 1 of Netflix’s The Witcher series debuted in December 20, 2019, as days after we see over one hundred thousand players either revisited the third entry of the game series or played it for the first time. The spike in player count was then seen once again when the second season of The Witcher series debuted in 2021. Both seasons of The Witcher series received positive reception from fans and critics alike. Based on Rotten Tomatoes, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is also getting positive reviews from fans since it debuted last week, September 13, 2022.
Cyberpunk 2077 debuted with mediocre scores back in 2020 due to poor performance on various platforms. The PC version of the game was the only decent offering at the time and receiving a smooth experience that was based on the type of hardware you were using to run the game. Despite having a more palatable experience on PC, we still gave the game a 7/10 as there were questionable gameplay design choices that missed the mark. For the PS4 console version, we gave it a 5/10 due to various technical issues that made the game close to unplayable in some instances.
Our impressions were, again, back in 2020 as CD Projekt Red have been releasing patches that all versions of the game are now in a more stable state. Looking at the game’s recent Steam reviews, the impression of the game is slowly turning around as the average reception is currently at ‘Mostly Positive’.
