PlayStation Stars Is Now Available in Asia
/Sony just launched their new rewards program called PlayStation Stars where players can earn coins by completing campaigns. Users can then use the coins earned to unlock Digital Collectibles, earn games, and PlayStation Store wallet credits.
For now, the program is available in the Asia region and according to Sony, more regions will have access to the rewards program in the future:
Asia, including Japan: September 29 (local time)
North and South America: October 5 (local time)
Europe and Australia: October 13 (local time)
PlayStation Stars is free to join and can be accessed through the PS app on mobile by simply logging in through your PSN account. We currently don’t see it integrated through PS4 and PS5 systems so it’s likely all done through the app for now.
As of what we are seeing, there isn’t a wide list of campaigns to participate in to reward coins. We saw one campaign that requires you to buy a game in the list of games found in the campaign to earn 50 coins. One campaign tasks to “pick a fight to honor 30 years of Hadoukens” by what we assume is playing either Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat 11, or Tekken 7. Doing this will reward you with a Novelty Toy Fight Trophy digital collectible.
The campaigns mentioned above have a duration of 32 days to complete them, so expect future campaigns to have a similar time limit.
The games you can earn through these coins are pretty pricey. Here’s a list of games you can earn through the program (as of September 29, 2022)
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - 15,000 coins
Cult of the Lamb - 6,250 coins
It Takes Two - 10,000 coins
The Quarry - 17,500 coins
Hades - 6,250 coins
You can also spend the coins you earned to get PlayStation Store Wallet credit. As an example, in the Hong Kong region, it will cost 4,000 coins to earn 160 Hong Kong dollars while 1,000 coins can earn you 40 Hong Kong Dollars.
If you’re wondering if the rewards program is connected with NFTs, the latest post covering the launch of PlayStation Stars in Asia has one section answering whether a user can trade or sell the digital collectibles you earn in any way, and it looks like you cannot.
Are digital collectables one-of-a-kind? Can I sell or trade my digital collectables?
These digital collectibles are created just for our loyalty program, and while some can be rare, they are not one-of-a-kind nor does it leverage blockchain technology. They cannot be resold or traded. Digital collectibles can only be earned or acquired through PlayStation Stars.
The rewards program is new and we’ll see if it’s worth checking every now and then in the coming months, especially when more regions gain access to the program.
