Supermassive Games' new horror game The Quarry will have 186 endings
/Supermassive Games’ next narrative-driven horror game The Quarryw.toomuchgaming.net/blog-news/the-quarry-is-a-new-narrative-driven-teen-horror-game-from-supermassive-games will feature 186 different ending variations as the game’s script is said to be over a thousand pages long.
The reveal was made by the game’s director Will Byles, during an interview with IGN. He talked about the scope of work that was done to this game for both the developers and game actors involved.
“Writing a branching narrative is a really interesting exercise,” Byles told IGN. “We write a full, hundred page screenplay as if it were a movie. We develop our character styles, and once we've got that, then we can start looking at how we break that out into a full 10 hour experience.”
He goes on that with the game having an insanely lengthy script, the team will have to shoot about 50 pages a day. That’s a lot of work.
It’s all about choice in games like these. There are big choices that will greatly affect the overall narrative but small choices will also have an effect, like character relationships. Thankfully, Byles said to IGN that the game will announce if your choice had any effect on the story in any way, which quickly reminded me how narrative-driven games like Telltale’s The Walking Dead informed players – placing a small line of text on the corner of the screen that a character will remember the decision you just made.
The amount of endings feels a bit too much, but hopefully each one is worth experiencing to some degree, that it encourages multiple playthroughs.
For those not familiar with The Quarry, it’s a narrative-driven horror game set on the last day of Summer Camp at Hackett’s Quarry, where a bunch of teenage counselors decide to throw a party, and of course things turn for the worse. The game stars David Arquette (Scream), Ariel Winter (Modern Family), Justice Smith (Detective Pikachu), Brenda Song (Doll Face), Lin Shaye (A Nightmare on Elm Street), and more.
The developers, Supermassive Games, worked on similar projects like The Dark Pictures Anthology horror series and the PS4 exclusive Until Dawn.
The Quarry is set to release on June 10 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.
