God of War Reviews Tally

More than a week before its release, the embargo for God of War has lifted. Critics are claiming that the next entry in the God of War series is one of the best games in the PS4 system.

It looks like the drastic change from camera angle to even setting is paying off. When the game was revealed back in 2016, it was hard to believe this was the same Kratos that killed most of the Olympian gods in an over-the-top fashion. More footage and details surface and it becomes clear that Santa Monica is attempting to reshape the franchise without pressing the reboot button. They want to present Kratos in a different light, a side we never got to see back in previous titles. He has a son to care for now, and the first footage of him interacting with him was refreshing enough.

We gathered a variety of reviews, so go look below and see what they are saying about the PS4 exclusive:

IGN: "I expected great action from God of War, and it delivers that handily. But I didn’t expect it to be a thrilling journey in which every aspect of it complements the others to form what is nothing short of a masterpiece." - 10/10

VG247: "one of the best games of the generation" - No Score

Gameinformer: "Kratos’ reinvention serves as a narrative hook, but it also parallels the series’ evolution as a whole; where God of War once relied on bombast and bloodlust, now it leaves space for strategy and nuance. It still has superb action and plenty of jaw-dropping moments, but it supports them with a new level of depth and maturity. " - 9.75/10

Ungeek: "God of War is nothing short of a MASTERPIECE! Turning the game on its head to focus on story even if the series was known for combat was a REALLY risky decision but a risk that definitely paid off" - 10/10

Gamespot: "In many ways God of War is what the series has always been. It's a spectacular action game with epic set pieces, big-budget production values, and hard-hitting combat that grows more feverish and impressive as you progress. What may surprise you is how mature its storytelling has become." - 9/10

Polygon: "Some die-hard fans may fear this isn’t really God of War. I suppose they’re right. It’s even better. " - 10/10

Sirus Gaming: "The new God of War added and discarded a lot of things from its predecessors. Not only will we have a new world to venture into, but we also get to experience new ways to explore the world and combat enemies." - 9.6/10

Gamesradar: "I don’t think it’s possible to overstate just how good God of War is; how well realised its world, how nuanced and layered its characters and storytelling. The depth and craft of its combat, puzzles and almost every system it has sparkles and shines with an indulgence and luxury that regularly stopped me in my tracks to drink it all in." - 5/5

VentureBeat: "This new God of War takes a lot of risks. It trades blind rage and revenge for a story about a troubled father/son relationship. It ditches fast, combo-based violence for something more methodical. It’s a departure from everything that once was God of War." - 90/100
