A New Virtua Fighter Game Is Now in Development, Sega Confirms
/In a recent interview with Video Games Chronicle, Sega’s Global Transmedia Group Justin Scarpone, revealed that a new entry of the beloved fighting game franchise Virtua Fighter is currently in the works.
The interview, published by Video Game Chronicle on November 6, 2024, focused on why Sega was reviving classic titles such as Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, and more. The site asked how challenging it is to be sure these classic franchises will resonate with the modern audience. Scarpone had a detailed answer to that question and dropped that a new Virtua Fighter is in development right now.
“So we have a suite of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy bucket, which we announced last year at The Game Awards; Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed. And so all that’s very exciting. And then in certain instances, we’re also doing animation series, or live-action films to augment that and be part of those roadmaps.”
This is just a quick mention as no other details about the new title was mentioned as they focused on other topics and points on Sega’s approach on their pool of classic titles. But those that have been waiting for a new entry in the Virtua Fighter game series should feel comfort that they do have plans to move the franchise forward.
The last mainline entry in the series was Virtua Fighter 5, which launched way back in 2006. It was only recently that Sega released Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown on June 1, 2021, exclusively on the PlayStation 4. This version of the game is simply a remaster of Virtua Fighter 5 as it features updated graphics, new online features, while retaining the game’s core gameplay.
Life is Strange: Double Exposure brings back Max Caulfield with new time-manipulation powers, but struggles to capture the original’s emotional weight. While the dual-timeline mechanic is engaging, the story’s weak twists, forgettable characters, and technical issues hold it back. A nostalgic revisit, but not a standout entry in the series.
