Heartworm Brings Retro Survival Horror to PC This Spring

Fans of Silent Hill and Resident Evil have something to look forward to this spring. Heartworm, the upcoming retro survival horror game from solo developer Vincent Adinolfi and horror publisher DreadXP, is set to launch on PC in Spring 2025.

Revealed as part of IGN Fan Fest, Heartworm delivers a haunting experience inspired by the classics of the late ‘90s, complete with tank controls, fixed camera angles, and eerie, atmospheric environments. It also features Fatal Frame-like gameplay since the protagonist defends herself with a camera.

A Psychological Horror Story Rooted in Loss

At the heart of Heartworm is Sam, a young woman overcome with grief after losing her grandfather. Her desperation leads her deep into an internet rabbit hole, where she stumbles upon a mysterious forum claiming to offer a way to reconnect with the dead. Following a cryptic lead, she arrives at a supernatural house in the mountains, hoping to make contact with the other side.

Classic Survival Horror with a Modern Touch

While Heartworm embraces the mechanics and aesthetics of late ‘90s survival horror, it seems to have included modern features to make the experience more accessible. Players can expect:

  • A haunting journey through grief and psychological horror

  • 4-6 hours of gameplay with multiple endings

  • Both pre-rendered and in-game cutscenes

  • Classic puzzles and exploration-focused gameplay

  • Limited combat using a camera as a weapon

  • Modernized controls with third-person aiming, plus optional tank controls

  • Toggleable pixelation and retro effects for an authentic late ‘90s aesthetic

  • An original soundtrack that amplifies the tension and atmosphere

Early hands-on impressions of Heartworm have been overwhelmingly positive, earning it recognition in various highlight lists over the past year. With its blend of classic survival horror mechanics, emotional storytelling, and unsettling atmosphere, the game is shaping up to be a must-play for horror fans when it launches on PC this spring.
