Isaac Clarke will talk in the Dead Space remake

During a Twitch livestream presentation, EA Motive announced that protagonist Isaac Clarke in the Dead Space remake will talk and will be portrayed by Gunner Wright, the original voice actor of Isaac in Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3.

In the original game, Isaac Clarke was a silent protagonist as the only thing you hear from the space engineer turned necromorph killer were just grunts and screams as he struggles to survive the events of the first game. He was then given a voice through Wright in the sequels.

In the original game, the silent Isaac explores every part of the ship to fix various problems and was told what to do by other characters with no feedback by the engineer. With Isaac now with a voice, the developers want to display Isaac’s involvement in fixing the USG Ishimura as by profession, Isaac is literally the man for the job. We will also see Isaac to be more involved in trying to find his girlfriend Nicole as that was the main motivation to why he was part of the rescue mission in the first place.

They also set rules for Isaac talking - he will only talk when he’s spoken to and only when it seems weird to have Isaac silent in a situation. EA Motive wants to keep the silent but eerie atmosphere established in the original game as the silence could help bring tension, so don’t expect Isaac to mumble or talk to himself when he’s alone roaming the narrow corridors.

EA Motive also mentioned that they wanted to inject more of the lore already established by the previous games and from other mediums. They didn’t go into detail about what exactly will be added but the goal is to tie the remake to what comes after it. They iterated that they wanted to inject these additions to the story but retain the original flow of the overall narrative.

EA Motive’s livestream of Dead Space also shared gameplay footage of the game in it’s very early stages as those watching was given a raw look at the possible changes coming to the remake in a gameplay perspective. More detail in Isaac’s suit and environmental detail aside, the big notable change is how detailed the gore will be when you damage necromorphs.

The developers showed that there will be layers in these character models that will change when hit by let’s say Isaac’s iconic Plasma Cutter weapon. Hitting a limb for the first time will peel off the skin making the bones visible, clearly showing that that part of the body is at the point of dismemberment.

Zero gravity improved

Another change confirmed in the livestream is how Isaac Clarke will traverse zero gravity segments in the remake.

In the original game, Isaac would be magnetized to a surface to prevent him from floating around and players would have to fling Isaac to another section of the level then stick to its surface once again. That’s all going away as EA Motive will be implementing the free space movement that was implemented in Dead Space 2. EA Motive demonstrated this in the livestream and the developers noted that due to this change, these levels will be different in the remake as the player will no longer be restricted when exploring these levels.

The footage on the game feels raw but appreciated as fans of the series were given a first look at the direction EA Motive is taking when rebuilding the original game from the ground up.

With it being this early in development, things can easily change due to various reasons but it was interesting to give the public a raw look and an explanation at the concepts they are planning to implement to cater to not only newcomers in the Dead Space world but fans that have stuck with the series for years.
