Marvel's Midnight Suns announced by XCOM developers Firaxis Games

Marvel’s Midnight Suns was announced during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2021 and it’s a tactical RPG being developed by Firaxis Games, best known for the XCOM series. It’s set for a March 2022 release and will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The game is inspired by the popular ‘90s comic series of the same name and gathers known heroes such as Captain America, Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Blade, Ghost Rider, and other characters as they go against threats in the magical nature.

For the game, players will take control of a similar group of heroes and will be joined by a new and original hero named The Hunter, created by the Firaxis team together with the folks at Marvel. The Hunter will be considered as the stand in for the player among the known heroes and will be customizable in both appearance and combat ability.

The big bad will be Lilith, the Mother of All Demons, and The Hunter is apparently the only one capable of stopping her from consuming the world.

What’s interesting is that this is a tactical RPG, and Firaxis Games — best known for their work on the XCOM reboot — seems like they are the perfect studio for the job. Players will go on turn-based missions with three other superheroes. They will gain experience, gain new abilities, you know the drill.

In a Polygon interview, Jake Solomon, the designer taking the lead on the development of the new Marvel game, says there will be “zero mechanics shared between XCOM and the Midnight Suns,”

How will it play exactly? Firaxis Games plans to give the world their first look at gameplay of Marvel’s Midnight Sons on September 1.
