Nintendo Introduces Virtual Game Cards, Letting Players Share Digital Games

During the March 27 Nintendo Direct, Nintendo announced Virtual Game Cards, a new feature that allows Switch and Switch 2 players to share their digital games with friends and family.

Share digital Switch and Switch 2 games with Virtual Game Cards

Simply put, players can convert their owned digital games into Virtual Game Card versions, making it possible to lend them to others. This feature even allows users to transfer digital games between their own Switch systems, including the upcoming Switch 2, set to launch later this year.

Virtuql Game Cards works similarly to lending a physical game card and slotting it in your system to play as you need to load the Virtual Game Card for the game to be visible in your dashboard, ready to be booted. And if you want to share it or give it back, eject it like you would a physical card.

There's also no need to chase after borrowed games—Nintendo's system will automatically return lent Virtual Game Cards to their owners after 14 days. Hopefully we can set how long until it automatically returns.

Users can lend Virtual game Cards wirelessly or via a one-off local wireless connection. Players can pair their Switch with one other Switch device. Once paired locally, you should be able to do the sharing process online.

Additionally, Nintendo Switch Online family plan members will have the ability to share Virtual Game Cards with family members linked to their account. A big plus to parents as they can just lend games in their own account and simply share a game found in their library one by one to their family member.

Nintendo has confirmed that Virtual Game Cards will be supported on the Switch 2, ensuring that players upgrading to the new console won’t miss out. This feature is set to launch at the end of April 2025.
