Rockstar’s open world western, Red Dead Redemption 2, was going to sell well, but who would have expected Rockstar’s latest to reach up to 17 million shipped worldwide in less than two weeks.

Take-Two Interactive made the announcement during it’s Q2 report for its current fiscal year. The company also disclosed that Read Dead Redemption 2 was able to surpass Red Dead Redemption’s sales in just eight days. The first game took eight years to reach its sales numbers, and the sequel surpassed it in just days.

Take note that “shipped” means sales to retailers, not to customers.

$725 million sales over its opening weekend

To add more perspective with Red Dead’s success, Rockstar’s latest open world game was able to earn approximately $725 million in it’s first three days, making Red Dead Redemption 2 the biggest opening weekend of any entertainment product.

It’s an amazing accomplishment and Rockstar is just getting started with Red Dead Redemption 2. Next up is the release of the game’s multiplayer portion, Red Dead Online. We know how successful GTA Online is for Rockstar, and with this kind of success this early for Red Dead Redemption 2, it’s safe to expect more success is coming their way soon. And it’s only out in two platforms, too.
