Sony will offer new tiers of PlayStation Plus starting this June

Sony has finally spilled the beans as they revamp their PlayStation Plus subscription service and provide new tiers to offer users more features such as PlayStation Now and access to over 700 games.

If you’ve been listening in on the latest Sony gossip, then you’re not surprised as the PlayStation Plus is getting an overhaul, expanding the service by offering two additional tiers that gives users access to the cloud-streaming service PlayStation Now, and the library of downloadable games that consist of PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PSP classic titles.

Here’s the rundown of each tier for the new PlayStation Plus:

PlayStation Plus Essential ($9.99 monthly / $24.99 quarterly / $59.99 yearly)

Provides the same benefits that PlayStation Plus members are getting today, such as:

  • Two monthly downloadable games

  • Exclusive discounts

  • Cloud storage for saved games

  • Online multiplayer access

  • There are no changes for existing PlayStation Plus members in this tier.

Price for PlayStation Plus Essential remains the same as the current price for PlayStation Plus.

PlayStation Plus Extra ($14.99 monthly / $39.99 quarterly / $99.99 yearly)

Benefits:

  • Provides all the benefits from the Essential tier

  • Adds a catalog of up to 400 of the most enjoyable PS4 and PS5 games – including blockbuster hits from our PlayStation Studios catalog and third-party partners. Games in the Extra tier are downloadable for play.

PlayStation Plus Premium ($17.99 monthly / $49.99 quarterly / $119.99 yearly)

Benefits:

  • Provides all the benefits from Essential and Extra tiers

Adds up to 340 additional games, including:

  • PS3 games available via cloud streaming

  • A catalog of beloved classic games available in both streaming and download options from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PSP generations

  • Offers cloud streaming access for original PlayStation, PS2, PSP and PS4 games offered in the Extra and Premium tiers in markets where PlayStation Now is currently available. Customers can stream games using PS4 and PS5 consoles, and PC.

  • Time-limited game trials will also be offered in this tier, so customers can try select games before they buy.

This is the first major change for PlayStation Plus since it was launched in 2010. PlayStation Now, a cloud-streaming service, still remains available in select regions. Sony did state they intend to expand their cloud services to “additional markets”, but they didn’t go into detail and will provide more details at a later date.

The new PlayStation Plus service and its new tiers will slowly roll out starting in June. The improved service was launched in several markets in Asia, followed by North America, Europen, then the rest of the world where PS Plus is currently offered.

You can read the full announcement in PlayStation’s blog post. Sony plans to share more information as they didn’t go into details what type of games will be available in the Extra and Premium tiers.
