Tales of Arise Costume Packs come with strong skills for each character

The JRPG Tales Of series is known for providing appealing cosmetics to give players the option to customize playable characters and Tales of Arise is no different. Released last Friday, the game launched with a variety of DLC offers and some of them are in the form of costume packs from swimsuit attires to school outfits. What’s unusual is the bonus skill points and skills that come with these cosmetic packages once you claim them.

Yes, picking up cosmetic packages like the Beach Time Triple Pack will provide you with different outfits and headgear for specific characters but also a title for each character. It even comes with 300 Skill Points (SP).

Titles are the character progression in Tales of Arise as every title you earn opens up a new skill tree of skills that can be unlocked using SP. So these packages are not purely just for cosmetics. It provides skills that could potentially make your game easier.

Here are the DLC cosmetic packs that comes with titles and SP:

  • Beach Time Triple Pack (Male)

  • Beach Time Triple Pack (Female)

  • School Life Triple Pack (Male)

  • School Life Triple Pack (Female)

  • Warring States Outfits Triple Pack (Male)

  • Warring States Outfits Triple Pack (Female)

Can I claim the costumes only?

Sort of. If you really want the beach costumes for your characters or run around as a bunch of modern school kids that were magically transported in a high-fantasy world, by all means. But the moment you claim even a single piece of cosmetic gear from the pack the skills that come with it will be available to you.

If you’re not interested in playing with the skills that come with the DLC, the best way around it is simply not investing SP on these skill trees and not using the Artes that comes with each one. For the bonus SP in the package, you can choose to not claim it if you’re not interested.

This goes to players that purchased either the deluxe or ultimate edition, which comes with premium DLC packs with permanent boosts. If you just want the extra items and the costumes but not, let’s say, the experience boost, just don’t claim it.

If you somehow accidentally claimed these boosters, you can turn them off in-game through the main menu. Simply go to ‘Field Guide’ and press ‘artifacts’ to see the various boosters available, then simply turn off what you don’t want in your game.

Boosts for single player games are nothing new as it’s been around for years, and it only becomes harmful if it’s blatantly obvious that progression in a game was altered to encourage players to even consider these types of DLC. For example - the standard rate of gaining experience was decreased, encouraging spending.

Bandai Namco went all out with these kinds of DLCs in Tales of Arise as experience boost and titles aren’t the only things on offer in online stores. If you really want to, you can purchase levels for your characters and buy Gald (game’s in-game currency) with real money. Some packs also reduce the amount of minerals needed when crafting items or cooking and even reduce the prices of items sold in stores. There are even DLC packs that increases the amount of SP you gain in battles. They are practically selling ways to make the game easier.

I’m past the 15 hour mark on Tales of Arise and thankfully, so far, the amount of experience or SP you earn in the game doesn’t seem off or unforgiving. I don’t feel the urge to purchase these boosters and I'm completely fine without the extra SP and the skills locked away in these cosmetic packs. It’s just a shame though that there are skills locked away in a paywall because what they provide for your characters are quite substantial.

These types of DLCs, I'm not fond of them. As much as it’s all optional, it’s very existence hovers around when playing Tales of Arise as every time you enter the main menu or go to the campsite, the DLC content is there, staring at you, just one click away.
