The Dead Space Remake Is Real, So Here Is What You Need To Know
/EA announced during their EA Play Showcase that a Dead Space remake is indeed happening and is being developed over at EA Motive, the developers that brought us Star Wars: Squadrons. A short teaser was presented, giving us a glimpse of the horror only Dead Space can deliver and towards the end a small glimpse of Isaac Clarke.
Have a look at the teaser below.
Wait, is this a remake or remaster?
Let’s get this out of the way - this upcoming Dead Space is a full remake of the first Dead Space game that came out in 2008. It’s not a remaster of any kind. Folks at EA Motive are building this new version of Dead Space from the ground up and will be released only in current generation consoles.
When will it be released?
There is no release date at the moment. Not even a release window. So far, you’ll have to run with the fact that a Dead Space remake exists and is currently in development.
What are the platforms for the Dead Space remake?
During the EA Play reveal, EA and EA Motive confirmed that the Dead Space remake will be available on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. There are no plans to provide a previous generation version of the remake.
Dead Space remake will feature new assets, no loading screens
In an IGN interview with the developers working on the Dead Space remake, Creative Director Roman Campos-Oriola stated that game assets such as visuals, sound and gameplay are all being rebuilt from scratch for this remake, saying “We are not porting them, it's not uprezzing the texture or adding more polygons to the model. It's really rebuilding all these elements, shooting all the animations, et cetera.”
“We want to make that immersion even deeper with a fully interactive experience, from the start screen to the end credits. We don't want anything to pull you out of the experience and we don't want any cuts,”
And with it being the era of SSD storage, providing a smooth experience from start to finish is possible.
But the original Dead Space games has been known for seamless gameplay since it had no sense of going through the typical loading screen when moving from one area to another. This is due to smart level design by the developers from the now shut down studio Visceral Games, who were able to mask when the game decides to load the next area of the game through doors and elevators.
Will the remake tell the same story as Dead Space 1?
From what we know so far - yes but with improvements. Going back to the IGN interview, the developers are delivering the same story but with a few improvements, such as providing added reference that would eventually help better complement the story that occurred in Dead Space 2.
The Dead Space remake will not have microtransactions
If you remember the time when microtransactions were booming in the video game industry, Dead Space 3 was one of the titles that tried to implement in-game purchases for the game. It didn’t go so well and the developers of the remake are “learning from mistakes such as microtransactions”, confirming as early as now that the Dead Space remake will not have microtransactions.
Rumors that EA will announce a Dead Space remake have been swirling since the start of July which instantly triggered the need to revisit the original game. To my surprise, for a 2008 game, it still holds up as a solid survival horror even in 2021’s standards.
