Xbox Announces Gears of War: E-Day Prequel, Set 14 Years Before the Original Game
/Xbox announced during their 2024 Xbox Games Showcase that the next entry in the Gears of War series and it is called Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel that puts protagonists Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the spotlight, giving players first-hand experience on when the Locust first made their appearance in the world of Sera.
A prequel that isn’t a spin-off
While there isn’t much to go on with the game’s initial trailer, the video is showing in-game graphics and not a cinematic as Gears of War: E-Day is being developed through Unreal Engine 5.
The focus of the new campaign is focused yet again in Marcus and Dom’s perspective, and with it being a prequel, you get to see the early stages of their relationship, making E-Day an origin story of one of the series’ prominent events in its history, but first-hand seeing the formation of a bond these characters established, which was clearly seen in series first titles.
Locust is naturally the focus here, and while fans have experienced multiple games where you face the Locust, the developer aims to bring this alien threat into a new light, pointing out that this is a time where the resistance was still adapting to their new threat. For example, the famed Chainsaw Lancer doesn’t exist yet as the weapon in the trailer was indeed a Lancer but with a bayonet as its melee attachment, so it’s likely we will see the famed attachment slowly become a staple in every soldier’s arsenal.
In a post from Xbox Wire detailing the details on the new game, Coalition states that this is not considered a spin-off title but a new entry for the mainline series.
So far, no release date was announced for Gears of War: E-Day.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is now my favorite title from the Persona team by far. It’s one of those rare games where its main pillars work harmoniously, and you get lost in its charm. It’s a pristine JRPG, with enough style and substance to satisfy hardcore JRPG fans, Persona fans, and even those who rarely touch JRPGs.
