Path of Exile heading to Open Beta on January 2013

The Free-To-Play Action RPG Path of Exile, strongly inspired by Diablo 2, is hitting Open Beta next month. The New Zealand developers Gear Grinding Games made the announcement over at their forums.

It was hinted before that the Open Beta would go live sometime December, but now it's official - Open beta will start next year, January 23, 2013 US time. A bit of a delay, but from what I gathered from other players of the game, a one month delay isn't so bad.

This move to a January release is to prepare for the upcoming issues they might encounter during the Open Beta. Since it's now the holidays, Grinding Gears won't be able to give the Open Beta the support it deserves since some of the developers will be on holiday break. Moving it to next month gives them time to rest up and prepare for the Open Beta.

Path of Exile game systems explanations

Together with the game heading to Open Beta, the game's third act will be available to players. The 0.10.0 patch will be implemented and will include a final character wipe when the Open Beta kicks in.

Path of Exile has been in Closed beta since August 2011.

Grip-it Analog Control Stick Covers

One things start getting intense in video games, most people start sweating in the hands and that might make one's thumb slip off the control sticks and cost you the round. That's where Grip-it comes in.

Now I don't get sweaty hands a much (only on occasions) but the thumb sticks on my PS3 controllers have been put through the works. If you caught my "I finally got a PS3" post then you'd know that my first game was Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. What am getting at is the left sticks on both of my controllers have lost the roughness they initially had. with all the hyper combos that me and cousin have been dishing out, the sticks got worn down fairly quickly. Instead of having to buy a new controller or replace the analog stick, getting a pair of Grip-it looked like the easiest solution.

The Grip-it covers are what they are, rubber covers for your analog sticks and they do exactly what the brand says. The rubber material used is pretty soft while doing a pretty good job of increasing the grip between your thumb and the control stick. It's also pretty neat that they can fit on either the PlayStation 3 dual-shock controllers or the Xbox 360 controllers.

I got mine at Game One Gadget for I think around 400php but it does give you two pairs so I'd say it evens out price wise. Here are some pictures of the blue and black Grip-its on both my Ps3 controllers. Long story short, the Grip-it covers are great. As for them giving you "the competitive edge", that's another story.

Diablo 3 - My way to make the game interesting again

In Diablo 3, once you hit level 60 and kill Diablo on inferno difficulty, you are pretty much done with the game, and the endless grind to find better loot to simply kill monsters faster begins. I did the tedious grind and it eventually gets old. I also found myself on the auction house trying to sell my hard-earned loot for gold , or buy better gear for cheap. This was a method I see every time I log in Diablo 3. The Auction House crippled the replay value of this game in a way and I consider it a bad addition since the whole game revolves so much on it. Most of the time, you are simply hunting for any loot that has some value to sell. So I decided to completely remove that aspect from my playthrough that involves me having just one life. See how the game feels.

Yes, I decided to play a hardcore character. A mode that I've always wanted to tackle, and to make it a bit more interesting, I won't be using the Auction house for any reason. for the people unfamiliar to Hardcore mode - Once you die, your character and the gear he/she is wearing will be gone forever. There is no way of getting him back. Initially, I was planning to replay the game in softcore with a monk class( Since I haven't played one) without using the Auction House at all, just to see how the game feels without it. But I find it hard to manage since all my character's gold, storage, and crafting are shared across all characters, so it didn't feel much of a fresh playthrough. Then I noticed a couple of my friends wanted to progress through hardcore, so I decided to do my 'no Auction House' playthrough on hardcore since it's completely separate from softcore.

I got the idea from Kripparrian, a Twitch streamer who got the Diablo 3 world first Diablo kill on hardcore inferno difficulty. Right now, he's attempting to finish inferno on hardcore again with just self found loot. His is a bit extreme since he's only using loot found on the ground and nothing else. For me, I simply want to eliminate the Auction House from the picture.

No purchase or selling from the auction house, that's pretty much the only rule I placed myself and it's turning out to be a lot of fun. It's not as punishing as you think too. The loot found in-game and crafted items I made were just enough to keep me alive until now. I've had a few close calls when we went through act 3 normal (Because we like pumping the Monster Power up every now and then) but it definitely made the game interesting again.

How I'm playing Diablo 3 right now is exactly how it should have been, minus the hardcore. When I first went through the game with friends, we literally had Auction House breaks every now and then to see if we can sell and score new loot. When we all return to progress further, we find ourselves steam rolling the content thanks to our new gear we got from the Auction House.  In the early levels, some players don't really care if its good or not and just want to earn more gold than the amount you get if you sell it in a merchant, so you usually find really good gear for your class at ridiculously low prices.

So far so good, Currently level 33 and doing this is getting me hooked again to Diablo 3. How I'll react when my Monk dies, we'll just have to see when I get there. But that lingering thought that I could die at any moments keeps it exciting, especially now since we are at Nightmare difficulty and lag in this game can definitely kill. It's definitely interesting and hopefully it stays that way all the way to the end. Hardcore inferno Diablo kill? Wishful thinking.

Weekend, what are you playing?

Hitman Absolution After an unintentional hiatus, the weekend post is back and in full force. The weekend post not being made was due to lack of time and nothing more. But enough about that because tis the season for new releases. So, what are you playing this weekend?

Migoy: Just got myself a copy of Hitman: Absolution so Imma surely be playing that. Will probably record my gameplay through the entire thing but we'll see. Aside from that I'm planning to hit my imported copy of Max Anarchy again simply because I haven't finished it yet. Max Anarchy / Anarchy Reigns is hella fun by the way. And finally, a game that I've been sinking my teeth into recently and simply can't put down a lot of the time is Super Robot Wars OG Saga: Endless Frontier EXCEED. This game did not get localized like it's previous title but it's a simple RPG and impossible to get stuck in. It sucks that I can't read Japanese and can't appreciate the story and conversations that the characters have with each other but the combat is just too good. I don't know any other game that has combat similar to the SRW OG sage games on DS but I believe Project x Zone on the 3DS pretty much has the same style of combat. That game of course is also only in Japanese. :(

Quash: I was all set for the Lost Shore's weekend event over at Guild War 2, but of course something bad happens. Hours before the event my graphics card shows signs of dying. Any game I play results in graphical artifacts and a crash, even during windows startup. So now I'm at the process of finding a replacement graphics card to get my PC back up and running.

As I was looking around to canvas on a new graphics card, I visited Datablitz and bought Black Ops 2 on the PS3. I was a huge fan of the first, and it was only fitting to go ahead and buy the sequel. The game overall is what I wanted right now, a fact-paced FPS. Treyarch did good on the first Black Ops and so far I'm liking what I see. But sadly, as much as they say they made a lot of improvements graphics-wise, for a 2012 game, it really looks outdated. The multiplayer feels just like any COD, but after not playing any other COD title since the first Black Ops, it felt good coming back.

Arlie: I've been playing Assassin's Creed III since launch day and you can watch my play through on our Twitch.tv channel. Also, some casual DOTA2 gaming with my friends on Steam.

Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale Trailer shows Michael joining the fight

Remember Sony's 'Long Live Play' campaign? Then you'll understand the new trailer for Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale. The trailer shows Nathan Drake, Cole Mcgrath, Kratos, and Sackboy duking it out with 'Michael' throwing an assist. Check out the trailer below.

When Sackboy threw his ball at Kratos together with Nathan Drake's propane tank and Cole's lightning bolt, I could not help but laugh on how that looked. It looked out of place I'm sorry.

Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale comes out on November 20 for Playstation 3, and PS Vita.
