Broken Roads is a cRPG that reminds me of Fallout and Wasteland
/Team 17 and developer Drop Bear Bytes has revealed Broken Roads, a post-apocalyptic Australia-themed cRPG that hits PC and consoles sometime in 2022. The game is narrative-driven and features a turn-based combat system with a Moral Compass system that can affect various dialogues, quests, and character development.
The setting, the designs, it’s isometric perspective, Broken Roads reminds me of games like Wasteland or even classic Fallout. But this Moral Compass system seems to be at the center of how this game will work as the player can choose four different philosophical paths: Humanist, Utilitarian, Machiavellian, and Nihilist. It’s a classless system where a character goes one path and suddenly shifts to another based on the choices you’ve made along the way.
“As the journey begins, players will be asked a series of questions – moral quandries – that determine their starting position on the compass.” explains the developer. “Decisions made throughout the game will then shift their philosophical leaning and affect future choices, quests, and reactions from the people they meet.”
If you want to know more about how the Moral Compass system works, you can read more about it in detail in Drop Bear Byte’s development blog.
The game will feature real-world locations of Western Australia in a post-apocalyptic setting. The trailer above only gives us a taste of the world and how important storytelling is in the game and we have yet to see how the turn-based combat will play out or if it’s a rare situation that occurs in the game.
Developer Drop Bear Bytes is an independent studio that’s new to the scene as it was just established in 2019 and Broken Roads is their first project.
Broken Roads is expected to land in 2022 for PC and consoles. The game can now be placed on your wishlist on Steam. For consoles, they have yet to specify which platforms.
