6 Horror games to play during Halloween in 2021

Halloween is just around the corner and there’s nothing like playing a video game that delivers an immersive experience of horror and letting your imagination run wild, to a point that a dark corridor with eerie music can be enough to give you goosebumps. there are a lot of games out there that can give you the thrill you need but here’s list of games that would be a perfect fit for any Halloween plans.

Dead Space 1 and 2

A personal favorite as I was ecstatic to hear a remake was in development at EA Motive. Isaac Clarke’s first run with the marker and it’s Necromorphs is something I will always recommend to players looking for a good survival horror fix. The first two games can be quite a ride with the second game being the series at it’s best. The world created by Visceral Games and the creatures you need to face always gets to me even after playing it multiple times throughout the years. It’s nothing like being chased by grotesque creatures all at once, in space, and where dismemberment is the most effect means of dealing with such monstrosities.

The first Dead Space still plays great in 2021, so if you haven’t played it, you’re missing out.

Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil Village is the latest entry in the Resident Evil series and it’s just as scary as Resident Evil 7. You play as Ethan Winters yet again but this time the danger is more troubling and the events you go through can really stick in your head for a couple of days.

Village is further proof that Capcom still has the ability to bring Resident Evil back to it’s glory days as one level in particular established a lasting impression on me when I played the game back in May. It was so good it got me excited on what they have planned for Resident Evil in the future.

Dead by Daylight

This is a suggestion if you’ve never played Dead by Daylight before. A great game to start with other friends also new to the game. It’s a 4v1 multiplayer game where four survivors work together to escape the clutches of a killer controller by another player. The horror in Dead by Daylight truly shines when all survivors in the game and the killer have no idea what they’re doing.  I still remember the feeling of being chased by a killer for the first time, especially when it’s a familiar face like Scream’s Ghost Face or Michael Myers from Halloween. It can be heart-raising stuff as you’ll feel like a helpless teenager doing all that they can to prolong the inevitable.

The game was updated recently with a new killer - Pinhead from the Hellraiser series.

Alien Isolation

Mostly considered as the best video game for the Alien franchise, Alien Isolation is a fantastic first-person survival horror that perfectly captures why the first movie was beloved by horror enthusiasts.

You play as Amanda Ripley, the daughter of the famed Ellen Ripley in the films. In Isolation, Amanda is stuck in a space station with a Xenomorph hunting her down and it’s a thrilling cat and mouse where most of the time you’re running from the thing or finding ways to escape it’s clutches as you fix the many problems that prevent you from escaping. It’s quite lengthy for a horror game, so buckle up.

Resident Evil 2 (remake)

Ah, another Resident Evil. It’s not as scary as Village but it has its moments and I still consider it the best remake so far. It has the right balance of modern changes that brings the 1998 horror classic back into the spotlight, giving newcomers to the series a good lesson as to why Resident Evil is a beloved franchise to horror fans.

The Dark Pictures Anthology

If you’re looking for cheap scares and a game that leans more into spooky storytelling, then The Dark Pictures: Anthology is a perfect series to get into during Halloween. I consider it an interactive Tales of the Crypt as it’s a narrative driven adventure where your choices affect the outcome of the story and it’s characters. Some die in a gruesome fashion while some might come out alive and unscathed because of what you do in certain situations.

Developer Supermassive Games is aiming for The Dark Pictures Anthology to consist of eight games, each with their own set of characters and story. It started with Man of Medan in 2019, followed by Little Hope in 2020, then House of Ashes which was just released this month, just in time for Halloween. The next one, The Devil in Me, is planned for 2022 and is considered as the finale for the series’ first season. That’s three games now available and friends and family can get in on the fun too as these games can be quite entertaining to watch as you play.

Little Nightmares 1 & 2

Little Nightmares is an interesting one as it’s a fairytale of a small protagonist navigating a big world. The world is bleak but captivating as you explore each level and get disturbed by the monstrosities that you’ll encounter or try to avoid. The atmosphere was well established so I felt uneasy when playing it. You’ll always find yourself wondering how to get to the next area and it can be satisfying once you figure it out as your reward is getting out of that unpleasant situation, but the respite is only short-lived as you’ll be tossed onto another eerie encounter soon after.
