Evolution Championship Series Still Open To All Platforms After Being Acquired By Sony

One of the biggest news last week was Sony Interactive Entertainment acquiring Evolution Championship Series, the biggest fighting game tournament event and best known as Evo. One of the biggest question about this acquisition is if we will only see PlayStation games featured in the tournament moving. Apparently that won’t be the case.

In a tweet from Mark Julio, a well respected member of the fighting game community and is the head of business development over at Evo, made it clear that the event remains open to all platforms despite Sony acquiring the annual event.

What about Smash Bros?

Nintendo has also provided a statement to IGN regarding the recent acquisition of Evolution Championship Series:

“Nintendo has enjoyed engaging with fans at past Evo tournaments and wish the show organizers the best with their new venture. We will continue to assess Evo, and other opportunities, as we plan for future online and offline Super Smash Bros. tournament activity.”

What does this mean for Smash Bros. titles joining Evo? it’s unclear at this point but not out of the question. With the recent developments, it won’t be so crazy to expect Nintendo to organize their own fighting game event to host future competitions for Smash Bros titles and other Nintendo titles.

Evo Online 2021

Evo 2021 will return but will be in an online format and dubbed as Evo Online. The whole competition will take place online from August 6 to August 8 and August 13 to August 15. Entry will be free for all players in North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The games confirmed to be part of this year’s Evo so far are Tekken 7, Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Mortal Kombat 11, and the new Guilty Gear Strike in an open format. More games will be announced soon.

Online qualifiers will be livestreamed and more details are said to be revealed soon via Evo’s website.
