Snapshot Games’ turn-based strategy game Phoenix Point is finally out in the wild but only in the Epic Game Store for now.

Game designer Jullian Gollop, the original creator of the X-COM series, leads the development of Phoenix Point and this turn-based game is considered as the spiritual successor to the 1994 classic X-COM: UFO Defense. Phoenix Point costs $25.99 on the Epic Games Store with the usual options like the Deluxe Edition at $39.99 (if you want score some in-game bonuses, or the Ultra Edition which includes everything added in the Deluxe package plus the game’s Season Pass for $49.99.

What’s different?

This turn-based game is less simplified compared to Firaxis’ XCOM; Enemy Unknown or XCOM 2. In Phoenix Point, each soldier you command on the field use action points to do actions each turn. There’s also collision in this game, so providing a clear light of sight is important to get a decent shot off. They event have a feature called Free Aim which works like the Fallout series’ V.A.T.S system, allowing you to target specific body parts.

You’ll be doing missions from the three factions available in the game to progress through the campaign and a good amount of the game’s content is procedurally generated. There will be less pressure on how to manage your sorties, so not in the same vein as XCOM 2 where at the very start you are racing against a death clock in order to keep your campaign afloat.

Snapshot Games’ Phoenix Point will be available in consoles in 2020 but no exact date was given. The first post-launch content, called “Blood and Titanium”, is planned for an early 2020 release and is part of the game’s Season Pass.

Snapshot Games confirmed that Backers of Phoenix Point during its crowdfunding campaign (including all Fig backers) prior to March 12, 2019 will be given the game’s Season Pass for free.
