As Square Enix and Eidos Montreal promised, the next and possibly final installment in the current Tomb Raider series has been revealed. Titled Shadow of the Tomb Raider, it promises to close the loop from her rebooted origins by cementing her to finally become the Tomb Raider.

A preview event was held at the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles where Square Enix, Eidos Montréal, and Crystal Dynamics showed the the official “The End of the Beginning” reveal trailer. Members of the press and special guests were in attendance and received a hands-on preview of the game. The official description of the game is as follows:

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Lara must master a deadly jungle, overcome terrifying tombs, and persevere through her darkest hour. As she races to save the world from a Maya apocalypse, Lara will be forged into the Tomb Raider she is destined to be.

In "The End of the Beginning," Lara ruminates on the actions she has taken so far that have marked her a survivor of tragedy, explorer of ruins and possibly destroyer of the world. "I’ve come so far. I’m not turning back. After all I’ve sacrificed, I have to wonder… what will I become?"

Shadow of the Tomb Raider marks a turning point for the franchise. Not only will we cross the line from the young Lara Croft we've come to know to the Tomb Raider she is destined to be, but it will tie in with the consequences of unleashing the possible end of the world and how that will square with her fight against the secret society known as Trinity.

The game is being developed by Eidos Montreal, the studio principally responsible for Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. That raises some eyebrows as the franchise has been under the stewardship of Crystal Dynamics since 2006's Tomb Raider: Legend. Eidos Montreal is no stranger to the series though: they helped out in content creation for Rise of the Tomb Raider.

British actress Camilla Luddington (Grey's Anatomy) returns to voice and presumably mocap Lara as she has in previous installments. Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be available on September 14, 2018 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 compatible gaming platforms and on Windows PC/Steam.
