It Takes Two Reviews Roundup
/Sweden-based studio Hazelight Studios, makers of the unique co-op adventure A Way Out, will have their latest game, It Takes Two, coming out tomorrow on various platforms and the initial wave of reviews are in. And from the look of things, we may have a winner here as majority of the critics are enjoying this new co-op adventure.
Hazelight Studios new co-op adventure follows Cody and May, a couple on the road to divorce but was suddenly thrown into a magical world were they are puppet versions of themselves. They must now work together to overcome upcoming challenges and hopefully find a way back to the real world.
This game is strictly co-op and must be played with another player, be it online or local. Don’t worry as you don’t have to buy the game twice as players who own the game can give a friend or a family member access to the game for free to experience the whole game from start to finish.
What do the critics things? So far, majority are enjoying It Takes Two, as we see near-perfect scores all around.
Have a look at what some critics are saying below.
The Gamer (4.5/5): “It Takes Two is, without a doubt, the best co-op game you can play right now. It’s much more ambitious and bigger budget than A Way Out, which was still brilliant in its own way. Josef Fares and the team at Hazelight take things to the next level here, and I can only imagine what they’ll do when they’re inevitably given a triple-A budget.”
Eurogamer (recommended): “if you can swat the story away to the background, and consider it a slightly ill-chosen set-up for an adventure, then there's a lot about It Takes Two to enjoy. This is a rare kind of co-op experience, with an energy and imagination and playfulness that sometimes rivals Nintendo's. As a toy, it can be a joy, and it will create some co-op moments to remember.”
Screen Rant (4.5/5): “It Takes Two is a wonderful co-op game, at a time where we need these kind of games more than ever. The game is gorgeous to look at with a heartfelt, funny story, and such remarkable variety of gameplay that no-one could get bored.”
Push Square (8/10): “It Takes Two is an excellent co-op adventure. While it stumbles on certain narrative aspects and not all the performances are winners, it more than makes up for that with its brilliantly fun and ever-changing gameplay.”
Game Informer (9.3/10): “It Takes Two may not be the platforming juggernaut that it aspires to be, but it more than makes up for it with its big heart, wealth in variety, and gorgeous imagery.”
VG247 (5/5): “This is a game that I would recommend to anyone who longs for the kind of no-holds-barred childlike fantasy so common in the 80s but seems less common today. If that is you, don’t sleep on this real gem.”
Game Revolution (9.5/10): “It Takes Two is one of the most delightful and ceaselessly entertaining co-op games I’ve played. Hazelight offers so many exciting levels, abilities, set-pieces, and mini-games, but does not let this extreme level of variety affect its quality.”
Polygon (no score) : “Most big-budget games could use an editor to trim away the unnecessary bits that seem to exist to pad the length of the adventure and justify the price on the box. It Takes Two would benefit from a similar trim, requiring a more experienced writer to fix the weak narrative and dialogue, alongside a producer to make the tough choices of which segments of the game are fun versus those that are downright dull.”
VGC (4/5): “the action is the star of the show here and in that respect, It Takes Two is a big success. That the game never runs out of steam and is still throwing brilliant ideas and impressive set-pieces at players as it nears its end is a true testament to the level of creativity at Hazelight.”
The high ratings given by critics are so high so far that It Takes Two is currently sitting at 88% based on 43 reviews in OpenCritic and around 87% -90% in Metacritic depending on the platform. This puts the co-op adventure as one of the best reviewed game for 2021 so far. At this rate, there’s a chance It Takes Two can take the top spot but it’s pretty close as big titles are up there such as Hitman 3 and the upcoming Monster Hunter Rise, which is seen to getting big praise ahead of it’s Friday release.
