Minecraft's Steve and Alex Join the Roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
/ Miguel MendozaSuper Smash Bros. series creator and director, Masahiro Sakurai, unveiled on stream the newest character coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Minecraft Steve is the latest character to join the Nintendo brawler's roster.
A full trailer for the character was shown, including a short skit and a quick showcase of moves that reflect the game the character originates from. From building blocks, crafting equipment, to making traps. Minecraft Steve looks to do a lot of things, perhaps too much so as it's hard to imagine how his moveset exactly works given the limited information that we've been shown. A followup stream is set on October 3rd (10:30AM ET / 7:30AM PT) for a deeper breakdown on Minecraft Steve and all of his mechanics.
As for alternate skins and colors, Minecraft Alex, Enderman and Zombie will be filling in those slots. A new stage will also be included along with the new character and looks to cycle between the different environments found in the source game's world.
In a move that has caused an uproar in the Smash community, this does make sense. Minecraft is one of the most popular games out there and this does put a playable indie game character into the Smash roster. I'm very curious to see how this new character will function. Sakurai mentioned that they had to rework all of the stages to account for the block building mechanic of Minecraft which I guess means that the stage now has an invisible block grid to account for this. I'm personally not thrilled about the character pick but I am excited to see how they will work in-game.
