Valheim Boss Guide: How To Summon Every Boss In The Game
/Iron Gate Studios’ survival Viking sandbox game Valheim isn’t only about building fantastic structures and making a life in the afterlife, it’s also about besting the five mystical creatures known as The Forsaken. These bosses will only appear if you summon each one at specific locations with the right amount of materials and is the true goal and challenge to all players in Valheim.
Beating these bosses one by one is Valheim’s way for the player to progress in the world as each boss defeated gives you the opportunity to craft new items, essentially opening up new ways to improve how you build structures, craft, and strengthen your character. Each boss also gives you a trophy that if sacrificed in a sacrificial stone will grant the player a power that can be useful in future battles.
Here are the five bosses in Valheim and how to summon them.
How to Summon Eikthyr
Eikthyr will be eyour first challenge once you start a new character in Valheim. A mighty stag with crazy chained antlers which can be summoned in your starting area.
All you need to summon Eikthyr is by hunting down deer in your area and looting two deer trophies. Once you have collected two, head over to Eikthyr’s alter (found at your starting location), place the deer trophies, and you are all set to face the first boss.
Defeating Eikthyr will reward you with hard antlers (which can be used to craft a pickaxe) and the Eikthyr trophy.
How to Summon The Elder
After Eikthyr, your next challenge will be The Elder found in the Black Forest. This boss has multiple locations where you can summon The Elder and it’s randomly generated for each character’s world, so you’ll need to find these rune stones (glowing red tablets) within the Black Forest to find the exact location of where you can summon The Elder.
When you get the location (marked in your map), head over to the location with three ancient seeds for the summon. This item can be looted by Greydwarf brutes, Greydwarf shamans, and destroying Greydwarf nests. It doesn’t take long to gather three as there’s a good amount of these greydwarfs wandering the area. Once you’ve gathered enough, head to the location and simply interact with The Elder’s alter with the seeds in your inventory to summon The Elder.
Beating The Elder will reward you with the Swamp key — which is used to unlock crypys found in the swamp biome— and the Elder trophy to earn a new power by sacrificing the trophy.
How to Summon Bonemass
The third boss, which is called the Bonemass, will require you to venture to the swamp biome of your world. Just like The Elder, you’ll need to look for runestones in order to find the summoning location for Bonemass and these runestones can be found in swamp crypts. This is where the swamp key from The Elder comes in.
While you are in the crypts, keep an eye out for withered bones as you’ll need 10 of them to summon Bonemass. If you’re unfortunate in finding withered bones but encountered muddy scrap piles blocking your path, make sure to bring an antler pixeaxe or better as you can mine them to get through and sometimes doing so could score you a few withered bones in the process.
Once you’ve gathered enough withered bones, head over to the summoning alter (giant skull) for Bonemass to face the third boss of Valheim. Blunt weapons will be your friend in this fight.
Beating the boss will reward you with the accessory Wishbone and the Bonemass trophy. Wishbone can be equipped by your character and doing so will grant you the chance to find secret resource nodes like silver ore, silver veins, or muddy crap piles that are hidden underground. Your character will glow green if you’re stepping right under one of these valuable resources.
How to Summon Moder
Moder is rather tricky to reach compared to the last 3 bosses as this boss is right atop the mountain biome. Prepare yourself as at this point of the game the enemies you face will be rather tough and you could find yourself outnumbered at times. But most importantly, be sure to prepare your character for the cold weather up on the mountains as your character without the proper cold resistance gear will be affected by freezing, a debuff that will greatly reduce your health regeneration (-100%) and stamina regeneration (-50%). Craft yourself some Wolf armor gear or craft some Frost resistance mead if you’re planning to head to the mountains.
Just like previous bosses, you need to find Moder’s summoning location by locating and interacting with rune stones found in the mountain biome. These runes can be found in stone buildings who are mostly inhabited by draugrs. Once you’ve located Moder’s location, bring three dragon eggs to her alter in order to summon Moder. These aren’t simple eggs as each one weighs 200 pounds each, making only one character carry one to the alter at a given time. If you’re playing the game solo, get ready for multiple trips to the alter, or if you have friends to play with, each one can carry a dragon egg to make life easier. Activate the alter and get ready for a hell of a fight. Bows will be your friend on this one.
Defeating Moder will earn you Dragon tears, which allows you to craft black metal. You also get the Moder trophy for a chance to earn the Moder power.
How to Summon Yagluth
The fifth and final boss for Valheim at the moment is Yagluth, a big glowing skeleton creature with a crown on his head. He’s missing his lower half of his body so he’ll be crawling towards you during the fight.
You can summon Yagluth in the plains biome. Look for an alter that is within four giant stone pillars. The alter will require five fuling totems to summon Yagluth and you can only find these within the houses of the Fuling creatures that roam the plains. It’s tough to find these totems so it’s going to take awhile. If you see fuling shamans, take them down as they have a chance at dropping a fuling totem.
Once you’ve gathered five fuling totems, head back to the alter and place all five totems. Get ready for a fight as Yagluth will emerge from the ground and he will be a tough one. Beating Yagluth will earn you a new material, a placeholder item for the time being as it hasn’t been fully implemented yet in the game. You can collect this item but as of this moment it does nothing. You also get the Yagluth trophy which works and scores you a new power that reduces damage to elemental attacks.
These are the bosses you can summon so far in Valheim. The process of summoning these bosses may seem simple enough but actually collecting these items and getting to their location is a herculean feat, especially if you’re playing solo.
Take your time, gather enough resources to get the best gear, and before you know it you’ll reach Yagluth.
Don’t forget that Valheim was just released in Steam’s Early Access program this month and is slowly becoming the next big survival title. It also means it’s not complete and more content will be added in the future as development of Valheim over at Iron Gate studios moves forward.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is now my favorite title from the Persona team by far. It’s one of those rare games where its main pillars work harmoniously, and you get lost in its charm. It’s a pristine JRPG, with enough style and substance to satisfy hardcore JRPG fans, Persona fans, and even those who rarely touch JRPGs.
